COUN 6960 - Practicum Prior to enrolling in or starting this course, students must have successfully completed:
1. All prior coursework requirements (except for one elective).
2. A Placement Request Application in Supervision Assist with final approval from the Clinical Coordinator.
Completion of both criteria are required.
This clinical-experiential course is designed to meet the academic, accreditation, and state licensing law requirements for a supervised pre-master’s clinical practicum experience. This pivotal component of the clinical mental health counseling program, designed to provide students with a structured, supervised, and comprehensive field experience. It offers students the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and counseling skills in real-world settings. Under the guidance of experienced supervisors, students will engage in direct service with clients, including assessment, intervention, and evaluation, across a variety of clinical issues and populations. The practicum experience aims to refine students’ professional identity as clinical mental health counselors, enhance their practical skills, and prepare them for ethical and effective practice. Through direct client contact, supervision meetings, and reflective practice, students will gain a deeper understanding of the counseling profession and their role within it.
Students will complete a minimum of 100 clinical hours on-site. Please see the CMHC Program Handbook for more details. Please note that state licensing laws may require additional elements to the Field Experience including but not limited to extra hours, supervision, academic terms, academic credit, etc. Students are solely responsible for ensuring that their individual plan of study meets their state’s licensing law requirements.
