COUN 6170 - Addictions Counseling This course serves as a basic introduction to complex dynamics of substance use disorders. The current version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders will be used to explore the 10 identified classes of drugs. Other behaviors, including gambling disorder, that stimulate reward systems and produce behavioral symptoms comparable to those of substance use disorders will also be explored. Students will examine personal, social, and cultural attitudes, stigma, and stereotypes associated with substance use and addictive disorders. Current evidence-based models of assessment, treatment planning, intervention, and continuing care planning will be discussed. The most recent iteration of the ASAM treatment criteria for addictive, substance-related, and co-occurring conditions will be examined. Prerequisites: COUN 5510 , COUN 5520 , and COUN 5910 . This course is offered fully online, asynchronously with faculty and student interaction through Blackboard. Credits: 3
