COUN 5520 - Skills in Helping Relationships

Students will learn and practice foundational counseling skills essential for all counseling practice. These foundational skills, rooted in Rogerian theory (i.e., warmth, congruence, genuineness, unconditional positive regard), include active listening, non-verbal behaviors, thought exploration skills, feeling exploration skills, empathy, self-disclosure, and confrontation. Students will learn to apply skills in ethical and culturally relevant ways and practice skills during synchronous sessions and with peer colleagues outside of synchronous sessions. Finally, students will develop and practice demonstrating self-awareness and qualities congruent with the role of professional counselors. This is a hybrid course that utilizes synchronous and asynchronous learning that includes readings, live and recorded didactic content, live and recorded skills practice, and live supervision. Meets synchronously weekly every week in 10-week calendar. Credits: 3
