AHT 3050 - History of Illustration

This course examines the history of illustration from its origins in illuminated manuscripts, through the golden age of illustration in America, to the present. We will explore each era’s illustrators and their work, and evaluate how the history of illustration is both intertwined with and separate from that of the fine arts. We will study the genre as individual and cultural expression, but will also assess the influence of technology, commerce, and other historical transformations on culture and arts. Students of this course will explore how public perceptions of illustration and illustrators have changed, as we grapple with the innovations and controversies associated with the field.
