New England College’s Master of Science in Health Informatics is a 36-credit program which prepares students with technical knowledge and organizational management skills to improve access to health data, with special emphasis on electronic health records, and thus contribute to the enhancement of delivery of healthcare across the world.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of completing this program, students will:

  • Design relational databases incorporating classification systems, clinical vocabularies, and standardized nomenclatures;
  • Develop data visualizations that translate complex healthcare data into actionable insights for clinical and administrative decision-making;
  • Analyze privacy and security frameworks to assess risks and recommend safeguards for protecting healthcare information systems;
  • Evaluate legal and regulatory compliance issues affecting healthcare organizations and propose policy or procedural responses;
  • Assess the functionality, interoperability, and usability of health information technologies based on stakeholder requirements and produce evidence-based recommendations for system selection or improvement.

Internship

The Internship course allows students to overlay the academic and theoretical study of Health Informatics with practical experience in the field. Students have the means to apply academic concepts to solve real-world business problems.  Students will have a greater insight into a wide variety of operational issues that take place in professional organizations.  Students and their chosen Internship sponsor must be approved by the Program Director prior to the start of the internship. Internship courses have variable credit and are HIM 5901 through HIM 5902. A maximum of 8 credits of internship may be taken. Students cannot enroll in an internship until they have completed 20 credit hours of study at NEC.
