HIM 6030 - Legal and Compliance Issues in Health Informatics


Healthcare informatics is shaped by litigation, legislation, and regulation across federal and state jurisdictions.  Through this course students will gain foundational knowledge related to the laws, regulations, and accreditation practices in areas associated with confidentiality, privacy, and security of health data acquisition, storage and use on all levels of health informatics.  You will consider these from the perspective of the rule making agencies such as the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services.  You will become familiar with the concepts used in health informatics risk management and compliance from the perspective of the stakeholders and users of these systems. Prerequisite: Prior or concurrent enrollment in AI 5120 , CT 5610 CT 6110 HIM 5110 HIM 6050       Credits: 4
