PO 3430 - Media and Political Communication

Mass media and political communication play on outsized and oftentimes ubiquitous role in the lives of the citizenry, especially in the United States today. This is partially due to the explosion of social media, the decline of more traditional forms of media, and the 24/7 nature of the modern news cycle operating in a sharply partisan, hyperpolarized political environment. Understanding the types of political messages and media consumed by Americans-and especially the American electorate-is consequential for comprehending the state of American politics today. As such, this course will examine the purpose and practices of the contemporary news media, those who “make” the news as subjects and disseminators, the impact of the news media on American political life, and how political actors operate within the media environment.  Offered as needed.
