ED 3000 - Teaching English Language Arts Students will investigate how learning to read and write is a developmental process requiring exposure to oral language and listening experiences. Students will explore current research on how the brain learns to read. Characteristics of an effectively balanced and integrated literacy program will be discussed. There will be an emphasis on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, spelling, fluency, comprehension, and associated instructional strategies. Students will explore the various factors that contribute to reading and writing difficulties; and will learn how to conduct assessment procedures in the classroom, analyze the data to determine students’ strengths and needs relative to literacy skill development, and plan and implement data driven corrective instruction. Differentiation and scaffolding instruction will be discussed. Prerequisites: Must have successfully completed ED 1000 with a B- or better, and ED 2010 . Offered every fall. Credits: 4 Note: Students are to register for 1 credit hour of ED 3920 Fieldwork Practicum.
