ED 3630 - Teaching in the Humanities: Integrated Curriculum

This course aims to disrupt the idea that there is a single story of history and challenges students to understand the importance of interdisciplinary connections when writing lesson and unit plans. Students will explore subject integration using both state and national standards with an emphasis on the arts, cultural diversity and exploring all perspectives relating to art, literature, music, history, religion, and politics. This course encourages students to outline teaching strategies that support a balanced immersion across stories, readings, continents, and cultures. Students will aim to assess historical thinking rather than the recalling of facts and examine traditional and progressive approaches to teaching English and Social Studies at the secondary level. This course will prepare secondary pre-service English and Social Studies teachers to work collaboratively on unit and lesson design that moves each subject beyond a thematic approach, but rather focuses on understanding human ideals, roles, behaviors, and choices. The Understanding by Design framework in conjunction with the Universal Design for Learning tenants will be utilized for interdisciplinary lesson and unit plans. Prerequisites: ED 1000, ED 2010 Credits: 4
