Accounting

The Management Division faculty believe that competence in accounting is fundamental to good management. Recent events serve to reinforce this belief. This challenging major includes hands‐on experiences in accounting that prepare students for a variety of careers in the accounting field. For those interested in an advanced accounting degree, the College offers a one‐year graduate master’s program.  

One of the hallmarks of New England College is the close working relationship between our faculty and our students. The Accounting faculty is highly motivated to help each student realize his or her full potential for success in the program.

Learning Outcomes

Students completing the Accounting program should be able to:

• Prepare financial statements.
• Evaluate financial statements.
• Describe the role of the accountant in the organization and in society.
• Predict the impact of taxes on decision making and the statements.
• Explain the importance of costing processes in an organization.
• Recite and subscribe to the ethical code of conduct required by the accounting profession.
• Design and implement internal control mechanisms within an organization.
• Illustrate accountability to the stakeholders of the organization for the accurate and fair presentation of the financial statements.
• Enumerate the Pronouncements as promulgated by the FASB, SEC, AICPA, etc. in facilitating corporate governance.

Experiential Learning Component:

The Management Division recommends business students consider signing up for an internship as part of their undergraduate program. Accounting majors often benefit from the hands-on experience an internship offers to better understand the accounting field.   

Students have a wide variety of exciting opportunities for internship: one of our students worked on Wall Street for a major stock brokerage firm; another student worked in a cost accounting capacity for a local hospital; another student worked for a nonprofit organization locally using accounting software tools.
