COUN 6190 - Social and Cultural Foundations

This course addresses the impact(s) of ethnicity, culture, nationality, racism and white supremacy, disability status, body size, gender identity and expression, social class, religion and spirituality, sexual identity, age, and neuroemergence on the provision of counseling services. Students will be encouraged to embody the role of counselor-as-social-justice-advocate and explore their own privileged identities, biases, and belief systems about marginalized communities in order to provide socially just and culturally relevant counseling to diverse clients. More broadly, this course will address systemic oppression in the context of professional counseling and other healthcare services. Meets synchronously weekly every week in 10-week calendar. Credits: 3
