In the 21st century, the kinds of skills most valued by employers are complex skills that involve problem solving, communication, teamwork, and leadership. Learning how to adapt to different circumstances and remain flexible as the work environment changes should be a standard ability of today’s workforce. The Associate of Arts in Professional Studies prepares students in the technical and behavioral skills they need to successfully adapt to wide array of work expectations and situations. To achieve this goal, the program addresses organizational management and leadership tools and theories, with an emphasis on practical business applications and on the use of technology to help decision-making as well as to present information used to support decision-making. The coursework includes a general education component as well as courses specific to career preparation/advancement and workplace skills.

Students who complete the Associate of Arts in Professional Studies should be able to:

  • Think critically and solve problems, in a wide array of situations;
  • Find, use, and interpret information to shape decision-making, including the use of technology to present and analyze qualitative and quantitative information;
  • Model civic engagement as reflected in their interactions with others, their attitude towards their own learning, and their commitment to respecting the right and views of others; 
  • Communicate effectively in writing and speaking, using a variety of media;
  • Work cooperatively and creatively, demonstrating the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback, contribute to a group’s goals, and work effectively in a diverse environment.

Technology in the Workplace Series


The purpose of the series is for students to gain a practical, hands-on understanding and application of computer skills, from basic concepts and information to advanced applications widely used in a variety of fields. The courses are modularized at one credit per term to facilitate continued learning and application.
